Strategic Plan


Mission

To improve the wellness of Aboriginal individuals and of the Aboriginal community by providing services which respect people as individuals with a distinctive cultural identity and distinctive values and beliefs.
 
Principles
  1. Every person using our services has the ability to improve his or her own health.
  2. Every person using our services is a member of the broader Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community and has a right to access culturally relevant services from a variety of services.
  3. In order to strengthen the health of the individual we also need to strengthen the health of our community by mending and enlarging our traditional circle emotionally, mentally, physically and spiritually.
  4. In order to mend and enlarge the circle, we must provide access to the best possible traditional and western based healing approaches.
Strategic Directions

Strategic Direction # 1 - Primary Care and Health Promotion

Goal
To treat illnesses and reduce the risk behaviours related to incidences of prevalent diseases within the Aboriginal community.

Strategic Direction # 2 - Traditional Healing

Goal
To increase the understanding and acceptance of traditional healing practices by reintroducing and sustaining traditional ways.

Strategic Direction # 3 - Community Outreach and Advocacy

Goal
To increase Aboriginal access to culturally sensitive health services through increased knowledge and awareness of available services and Aboriginal needs, and through increased outreach and advocacy.

Strategic Direction # 4 - Sound Management and Accountability

Goal
To establish and maintain a cohesive, efficient and effective policy and administrative structure emphasizing a commitment to the betterment of the health status of Aboriginal peoples, responsible and unbiased representation accountability at all levels.

Service Priorities


1/ Primary Care and Health Promotion
  • Treating illness by providing Physician and Nurse Practitioner services as well as complementary health care (chiropractor, naturopath etc.) in Hamilton and Brantford.
  • Ongoing analysis of the preponderance of illnesses in the Aboriginal community.
  • Health promotion in the following areas:
    • Diabetes prevention
    • Hepatitis C. prevention
    • Screening prevalence of women's health issues
    • Sexually transmitted diseases (STD's)
  • Increased access off site and extended hours
NOTE: long range priorities - nutrition and pre-post natal care

2/ Traditional Healing
  • Hold circles in Brantford and Hamilton
  • Explore ways to attract more people
  • Traditional teachings
  • Traditional healing committee to provide education and Traditional Health for staff and board
  • Traditional counseling for individuals
  • Offer Traditional Healing services in Hamilton and Brantford
  • Building and maintaining a roster of Traditional Healers
  • Examine how we integrate Western and Traditional healing
  • Hold sweats
3/ Community Outreach and Advocacy
  • Assistance in identification issues; e.g. OHIP, Status Cards, Birth Certificates
  • Identifying mainstream networks
  • Client transportation
