Tobacco Education and Nutrition Education Program
Ononh'kwa is a collaboration of two new programs: tobacco Education and Nutrition being offered to provide tools and resources to the Aboriginal communities of Hamilton and Brantford to assist community members in promoting and assuming healthym tobacco wise lifestyles through the adoption of tobacco education and cessation and nutrition education.
NUTRITION PROGRAM
The Nutrition Education Program provides a variety of free, interactive nutrition programs / seris, educational displays, workshops, community kitchens, nutrition classes, health promotion and school health fairs, that are individually desgned to meet the needs of both community agencies and community members, and can be custom designed to cover requested topibs and ideas at your organization or at the health centre.
Some of the culturally specific Nutrition programs we are currently working on include:
· “Cooking with Kids” Series at Pinky Lewis Recreation Centre and Niwasa Aboriginal Head Start Preschool (food safety, healthy snacks, traditional food)
· Nutrition and Budgets: Creative Cooking Series
· “Nutrition in the Kitchen” – Healthy Cooking 101
· School Youth Fairs, Healthy Lifestyle Fairs, Community Events
· Meal Planning workshops/Native Nutrition Circle
· Classes with the Community Action Plan for Children and Canadian Pre Natal Nutrition Plan Programs in Brantford
· Recipe Exchange, Community Kitchens, Nutrition Circles
· Or helping out at any of your planned events
TOBACCO PROGRAM
The Tobacco Education Program provides tobacco education and smoking cessation support through a variety of groups, workshops, educational displays, and other interactive community programs. Learn about the difference between Traditional Tobacco and Commercial Tobacco, and find support, education and referrals while you are making the transition to become smoke free in a welcoming environment.
Some upcoming programs include:
- School and Public Health Fairs educating children and youth about Tobacco and its health effects
- Co-programming with Brantford Community Action Plan for Children and Community Pre Natal Nutrition Programs
- Tobacco Education and the differences between Sacred Tobacco Use and Commercial Use
- Aboriginal Youth Groups and education about Tobacco and Healthy Lifestyles
- Tobacco Support Circles for individuals wanting to quit smoking: providing advice, education and support
