Traditional Healing


Program Description

Traditional healing is an integrated, holistic approach to health. The body, mind and spirit of the individual are all viewed as equally important. Healing takes place thorough intervention from the spiritual realm through medicine people, through ceremonies and through the other gifts of Creation such as plants and water.

Program Objectives

To reintorduce and/or sustain the Aboriginal traditional healing component in health care.

Program Services


  • Provide direct service to clients through doctoring, counselling, healing and teaching circles
  • Provide traditional teachings and knowledge to the community through workshops to increase awareness and ensure cultural continuity
  • Provide traditional teachings, knowledge and support to the staff throught staff development and training workshops, circles to increase their awareness of Native culture and Traditional Healing
  • Act as a resource to staff in case conferencing and case management
  • Provide a unique perspective due to their ability to perform a holistic and spiritual assessment of a clients needs.
  • Offer traditional herbal remedies, organize sweats as well as other ceremonies that are in demand for men, women, youth and mixed groups to address such issues as family violence, sexual abuse, substance abuse, addictions, mental illness, rape and AIDS
