De dwa da dehs nye>s Hamilton site

Nearly two years new and the De dwa da hes nye>s Hamilton site continues to grow at a steady pace.  Close to 1,000 clients have registered with the Health Care for primary care.  Dr. Mike Monture and Dr. Les Lee provide physician services one day weekly, Wednesdays and Fridays respectively.  Three Extended Class RNs (Nurse Practitioners), Laurie Panagiotou, Jane Thomas-Yager and Faye Lee, are available throughout the week.  They provide a wide range of services including infant, child, adolescent and adult checkups, immunization, lifestyle and smoking cessation counseling.  Extended class Registered Nurses are licensed to treat a range of problems including ear, nose, sinus and throat infections, chest infections, bladder infections and sexually transmitted diseases like chlamydia and gonorrhea.

The Hamilton clinic offers foot care for clients having diabetes, poor vision or mobility problems (such as severe arthritis) both on-site, and in home.  This service is free for First Nations and can be accessed even if you have another family physician.  In addition, Naturopath Practitioners are available once weekly to our clients who desire a more natural approach to their health concerns.

Nurse Practitioners provide screening opportunities both on-site and off-site for a number of health concerns such as diabetes, tuberculosis, cholesterol, hepatitis, HIV, breast cancer, cervical cancer, and vision and hearing problems.  Off-site service deliver is provided ot the children, parents and staff of Niwasa Head Start Program, and the clients and staff of the Hamilton Native Women’s Shelter.  Weekly on Tuesday evenings, Laurie provides primary care at The Living Rock for Adolescent and young adults either who are under-housed or living on the streets.  Over the past few months, Jane has organized and delivered several flu clinics on-site and at the Hamilton Regional Indian Centre.

We are eagerly anticipating new programming initiatives in January 2001, and invite our readers to stay tuned for our next quaterly newsletter for important announcements of upcoming events.

De dwa da dehs nye>sBrantford site busy

The Brantford site continues to be very busy.  We are two years young as of November 2000.  Our caseload is now over 1200 clients.  Our clinical team is composed of Dr. Monture who is on site 4 days a week, 2 full time Nurse Practitioners, Barb L’Ami and Judi MacLeod, and 1 part time Nurse Practitioner, Miriam Reed.  Sandee Martin is our Secretary/Receptionist and Marcy King is Data Entry Clerk.

Plans are in progress to offer more off-site services and to further explore community partnership opportunities in the new year.  A new project will be preschool vision and hearing screening in partnership with the Pine Tree Native Centre.  Current off-site services have included the hepatitis B & C screening at Ganohkwa’Sra Family Assault Support Services and the ongoing Diabetic Healing Circles with SOADI (Southern Ontario Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative) and Pine Tree Native Centre.  We continue to offer the “Toes are Us” program for regular foot care every two weeks.  The Needle Exchange Program in partnership with Pine Tree Native Centre and the Brant County Public Health Unit has been up and running since spring of this year.  Read the column on the Needle Exchange for more information.

We are looking forward to another fulfilling busy year with further exploration and links within our community in addition to our regular clinical services on site.
