Traditional Healers & Teachers


Geraldine Wahiano:ron Standup is a Mohawk Traditional Healer from Kahnawake, Quebec and has been helping people who are seeking to heal from their past. She has been practicing what she describes as "shamanistic healing" for the last thirteen years. Geraldine describes herself as a shamanistic healer working within a persons spiritual realm. She is fluent in her language and very knowledgeable of her culture.

More recently she has been providing services to other communities such as the Anishnawbe Health Centre in Toronto, the Native Women's Shelter in Montreal and De dwa da dehs nye>s Aboriginal Health Centre in Hamilton and Brantford, Ontario.

Geraldine has an extensive educational background, teaching for seven years at the Howard S. Billings High School and serving for four years as assistant principal at the Kahnawake Survival School. She currently holds a seat on the Global Diversity Indigenous Caucus. She lives in Kahnawake with her three grown sons and one daughter.

Allan Jacobs is a Delaware from Moraviantown. He has been working with De dwa da dehs nye>s and other Aboriginal agencies that are helping people to heal for the past ten years. He conducts workshops on culture and healing and is very knowledgeable of our traditional medicines. He carries herbal remedies for diabetes, high blood pressure, detoxification, arthritis as well as salves for certain skin ailments.

Allan utilizes his gifts to assist people who are experiencing lower back pain and muscular discomfort. Utilizing a traditional approach he can pinpoint the location and work with the person to achieve healing results. Allan lives in Moraviantown with his mother and other siblings.

Walter Cooke is an Ojibwe/Cree from Berens River First Nation and is Bear Clan. Walter is a respected and learned elder of his community. Walter spent his life listening and learning from the elders from across this land. He utilizes traditional teachings and healing circles to counsel people in their search for a healthy lifestyle. Some of the topics of his circles are hepatitis C, relationships, diabetes and Teachings of the Eagle Feather. Walter has been involved in this community for a number of years.

Michael Standup is a Mohawk Traditional Healer and the son of Geraldine. He works in a similar manner utilizing the shamanistic approach of working within a person's spiritual realm. He is learning and gaining experience by working with individuals in his community as well as working with other aboriginal agencies. He has presented on Traditional Knowledge before the Global Diversity Indigenous Caucus.

Roger Jones Song wey-wey-gabow is an Ojibwe Anishnawbe from Shawanagan First Nation. He has provided his professional expertise and services at Anishnawbe Health in Toronto since 1993. More recently he has been dividing his time and energy at Knjikaning Community and Family Services at Shawanaga First Nation Healing Centre. He utilizes the eagle bone whistle to rid us of our grief, anger, shame and other hurts we carry from our past traumas.

Roger began to learn about Anishnawbe culture and ceremonies twelve years ago and is a second degree Midewiwin of the Three Fires Society. He lives at Shawanaga First Nations with his wife.

Knowing and Respecting Our Elders Healing Circle
What is an Elder to You? What is your expectation from an Elder?    
1. Experience, not just in age, knowledge, values, spiritual, family oriented, finance capabilities and problem solving skills. To be impartial. 9. Someone considered a teacher, could work backwards and forward. Can learn and teach.
2. A person of wisdom, experience, older person, knowledgeable and ready to transmit, language Passionate & knowledge 10. Respected in the community, certain role model, moral couple. To be available.
3. Teacher, knowledgeable, honest person, walk you through life. To teach me and to learn from. 11. Someone that is respected a lot. Passionate and knowledgeable.
4. Trusted known person, someone looked up to, knowledge of traditions & dedicated. To help the community in whatever is needed to heal the community. Knowledgeable in something. 12. Someone open minded. To be objective in my healing journey and be unbiased.
5. Someone that could help me. Understanding individual. 13. Provide guidance, someone with life experience. To be in a good way with a good mind.
6. Someone that is respected through his/her actions. To give me/us a helping hand. 14. All have a voice (old grandfather) quality in voice, a place to rest. Just to be what they are meant to be, to come home.
7. Any age, grown spiritually and sees the big picture. Help me understand the past. 15. Teachers, they are like General Practitioners. Someone humble, someone that takes care of his/her body and spirituality. Someone that could guide me in a good way. Someone that walks the talk.
8. Someone that supports and guides you. To provide support and have patience. 16. Looks at life in general in a positive way. Fireball - point things out to us, the 7 gifts and more.. Someone that could guide me regardless of my travels and my journey.
The above list was made during the Healing/Sharing Circle in Hamilton on Feb. 19, 2001, almost one year ago today. This is what our community in Hamilton and Brantford expects of any elder.
